
DLA Piper is the
multinational global law firm which is located in more than 30 countries
throughout America, Asia Pacific, Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. It had
total revenues of $2.48 billion and the average profit per equity partner of
$1.490 million in 2014 and it was the 3rd largest law firm in the United States
as measured by revenue. It was formed in January 2005 by a merger between 3 law
firms i.e. San Diego based Gray Cary Ware and Freidenrich LLP, Chicago based
Piper Rudnick LLP and UK based DLA LLP.
Origin: DLA Piper's origins can be
traced back to Thomas Townend Dibb and Sir Charles Lupton OBE. The founder of
the firm is displaced to Victorian bust of Thomas Townend Dibb. The 3 letter
abribriation used by the firm today- DLA conceals a complex history of
consolidation and name changes and picked up Lupton from Nelson eddison in
1920. The firm then merged with broomhead of Sheffield in 1988. The name of
this firm as Dibb Lupton and co. survived intact until the merger with
broomheads of shielf in 1988. Following the link of alsop Wilkinson in 1996 the
firm even then known as Dipp Lupton Alsop until around. The year was 2000 when the
name was shortened and renamed as DLA. It is now known internationally as DLA
Piper, the largest law firm in the world.
Piper Rudnick: Piper Rudnick was the
result of 1999 merger between the Baltimore based piper and marbury and Chicago
based Rudnick and Wolfe. This merger was the largest law firm merger in the
history. The combined firm was known as piper Marbury and Rudnick Wolfe LLP
until 2002.
