University of Tokyo, Japan

University of Tokyo, abbreviated as Todai is a research university and first in Japan among national 7 universities, which is located in Bunkyo, Tokyo, Japan. This university has 10 faculties with a total enrollment of around 30 thousand students, 2100 of whom are foreign. Its 5 campuses are in Hongo, Komaba, Kashiwa, Shirokane, and Nakano. This university of Tokyo is widely considered as the most prestigious university in Japan.

History: The University was reserved by the Meiji government in 1877 under its current name by merging older government, western learning and school of medicine. And, it renamed as "The Imperial University" in 1886, and then 'Tokyo Imperial University' in 1897 when imperial university system was created. On January 2012 Todai announced that it would shift the beginning of academic year from April to September to adjust its calendar with the international standard. The shift would be introduced gradually in over 5 years.

The University had 1282 professors in February 2012, among which 58 were women; according to the Japan Times. In the fall of 2012, for the first time; the University of Tokyo started 2 undergraduate programs totally taught in English and intermeshed toward international students, the international program in Japan in East Asia, Programs in English at Komaba (PEAK), and international program on environmental sciences. In 2014 the school of science at this university of Tokyo introduced on all English undergraduate transfer programs called GSC (Global Science Course).

Location and campuses: The University of Tokyo is located in Bunkyo, Tokyo Japan. It has its 4 campuses one is Hongo campus, and another is Komaba Campus, Kashiwa campus, Shirokanedai Campus. The main Hango Campus of this university occupies the former parkland of the Maeda family. Akamon is relic of this era as it is one of the university's best known landmarks. The Komaba campus is one of the five campuses of the University of Tokyo and is a home to the college of arts and science, graduate school of mathematical science, graduate school of number of advance research and service. This is only one university in Japan which has a system of 2 years of general education before they choose and move on to special field. There are now 7000 students enrolled in general education courses and 450 students showing specialties in the college of arts and science and 1400 graduate students in the advance study.

Facilities: This University facilitates the libraries, museums, and botanical gardens. It also offers swimming pools, gyms, sport fields, and athletic facilities. The 2 major hospitals are also in the ground of the university. Ito International Research Center, conference hall for public use, is also located inside the university.


Libraries: The University of Tokyo's library system consists of general library on Hongo Campus, komaba library in komaba campus, Kashiwa library in Kashiwa campus and 32 departmental libraries at the university.  The entire library of the university includes more than 9 millions of book, nearly 30000 subscription journals and many different digital resources e-books, e-journals and databases.
